I found a nice short review of the Targa DIP Phone 450 which can be bought at the Lidl (Holland). The reviewer had a VOIP account at a hosting provider XS4all. ....."And I must say it works great. The installation was not difficult, especially with the webconfigurator. Just read the manual carefully and you are using the Targa DIP Phone 450 in 15 mins. The one thing that was a little bit difficult was configuring forwarding for some specified ports (5060 to 5062) on my router to my prefixed IP address of the Targa DIP Phone.

Pro's:

• VOIP without PC
• VoIP and direct line network access within one device
• Fast Switching between VOIP and fixed network
• Contact Entries on handset
• Setup with Webbrowser on basis station or at handset
• Cheap

Con's:

• Look and feel. It feels a little bit cheap (but that it is ;-)) I think if you drop the handset it will be broken (not tested)
• Dialing plan is rather basic. There is only one user-editable number. This number will be dialed via the via fixed line. But you can add a * behind a number in the telehone book and this number will be dialed with the non-default network setting (fixed).
• Not able to add your own ringtones.
• You can not use a different ringtone for the different networks. Only for extern and internal call's.

Total impression is great! Maybe some of the missing features will be added in new firmware updates.

The most important differences between between the Targa DIP Phone 450 and the Siemens Gigaset C450 IP are (in Dutch):

 1. Online KPN telefoonboek: Targa niet, Siemens wel.

 2. Je eigen telefoonboek bijwerken via de computer: Alleen de Gigaset S450.

 3. De Targa heeft maar 1 voorgeprogrammeerde provider.

De firmware van de Targa is inderdaad anders dan die van de Siemens C450IP. De Siemens toestellen kunnen sinds halg februari na het bijwerken van de firmware de KPN Telefoongids gebruiken. De Targa haalt z'n nieuwe firmware ook van de Siemens site, maar dat was in elk geval op 8 maart 2007 niet de versie, die ook de telefoongids ondersteund. De firmware gaat rechtstreek van de Siemens website naar de telefoon. Die wordt dus niet eerst op je PC opgeslagen. Ik verwacht niet dat die mogelijkheid alsnog wordt toegevoegd. Bij de Gigasets zit een flyer over de telefoongids, bij de Targa niet. Ook is de lijst van providers, die de Targa kent beperkt tot 1 duitse provider, die voor 50% eigendom van Lidl is. Dat is geen probleem als je zelf de providergegevens invult via de webinterface. Een prima telefoon, voor wie z'n telefoonboek op ieder toestel met de hand wil invullen. Wil je dat ook via de webinterface doen, dan heb je de Siemens Gigaset S450IP nodig. Die is wel een stuk duurder. Ik heb de toestellen getest met de providers Budgetphone en 12connect. Dat werkt allebei goed.
